Andy Sturgeon is the gardener at the Daily Mail and appears regularly on GMTV and BBC1’s Housecall. He writes for Greenfingers.com and for numerous gardening magazines including New Eden, Garden Inspirations and BBC Gardener’s World and was formerly a columnist with the Sunday Express. His new book intended to revitalise the image of houseplants, “Potted” was published last year.
He has presented his own television series Planted and a gardening quiz show The Answer lies in the Soil for ITV. He also co-presented Gardening Neighbours on BBC2 and a DIY series for The Discovery Channel and The Weekend Gardener for BBC UKTV.
Andy worked as a landscape gardener when he left school in 1983. He then spent a further three years studying tropical plants and interior landscaping at the Welsh College of Horticulture and had worked for the Royal Horticulture Society in their gardens at Wisley.
In 1989, after working with several renowned garden designers, he established his successful garden design practice in tandem with a garden maintenance business. Since then he has designed unique gardens from roof terraces to country estates the length and breadth of Britain.
1994 saw a sabbatical which lasted nearly three years. It took him through mainland Africa and then diving and sailing around the Indian Ocean as crew aboard a number of yachts. He went plant hunting in Madagascar and observed tropical plant species in their native habitats.
Andy went on to travel extensively throughout South East Asia before working in Hong Kong as an engineer on the Tsing Ma suspension bridge, the largest of it’s kind in the world. He returned to Europe to teach snow boarding in Austria before coming back to England.
Areas of Expertise
In 1997, he wrote a gardening style bible “Planted” aimed at a younger generation of first-time gardeners. Published to much acclaim in October 1998 by Hodder & Stoughton it has changed the face of gardening books. Andy has designed and created gardens for film and television sets and exhibited garden design at Chelsea . He has also created an award-winning garden at Hampton Court Palace Flower Show and intends to exhibit regularly in the future.
