Renowned as one of the best motivational speakers today, Frank Dick’s presentations are highly
amusing and anecdotal, challenging and inspirational, making uncomfortable listening for anyone prepared to accept second best.
Formerly British Athletics Federation Director of Coaching, Dr Frank Dick OBE is currently the President of the European Athletics Coaches Association, and Chairman of the International Association of Athletics Federations Academy.
Frank studied at Edinburgh, Loughborough and the University of Oregon, and was a Fulbright Scholar. He specialised in Biomechanics and the Physiology of Exercise which, combined with his detailed study of training methods, has helped establish him as Britain’s foremost authority in applying the performance sciences to effective coaching for high performance. His book ‘Sports Training Principles’ is the classic University textbook in this field and the 5th edition is to be published in 2007.
Frank has coached athletes to Olympic, World and European honours in several events, most notably in the sprints and relays. Under his leadership, Britain enjoyed a period of unprecedented international success. He also worked and works with a number of legendary individuals including Daley Thompson, Boris Becker, Denise Lewis, Katarina Witt, Gerhard Berger and Justin Rose. In business, he has helped develop a coaching culture in Barclays, British Telecom, Unilever, Shell, Abbey and Rolls Royce.
Franks contribution to sport and coaching has been recognised in being awarded an OBE in 1989, induction to the UK Coaches Hall of Fame in 1999, the prestigious title UK Sporting Hero by Sport UK in 2001, and a doctorate from Loughborough University in 2003.
More recently, Frank has been involved in setting up the Institute of Excellence based at Loughborough University which identifies the principles upon which pursuit of excellence is founded. He is also the creator of the IAAF Academy, a global academy committed to the advancement and development of the highest level of coaches and of their profession.
Areas of Expertise
Currently he is the President of the European Athletics Coaches Association and a board member of the UK Sports Institute, Scottish Institute of Sport and member of the IAAF Coaches Commission. Frank has also held the post of Chairman of the British Olympic Coaches Advisory Programme (1983 - 1994), and Director of Coaching for the British Athletics Federation (1974 - 1994).
In Frank’s opinion there are three questions you need to address when you enter the arena of high achievement and excellence:
What do you want?
How much does it cost?
Are you prepared to pay the price?
These questions determine whether you can meet the challenge of moving from what was good enough to win yesterday; to what you need to do to win persistently tomorrow.

"To say you understood our requirements and your messages resonated with the team would be a serious understatement. In my experience the impact of guest speakers in your arena tends to dissipate very quickly when the troops get back to work, but I feel very confident that your extraordinary talented delivery will make its mark permanently"
Conor O'Kelly, Chief Executive, NCB Stockbrokers Ireland
