Background

In his writing and producing career as a teller of stories for factual television Frank Wintle has won gold and silver medals from the New York Film and TV Festival, the Golden Gate Award from the San Francisco Film and TV Festival, a best programme award from the Royal Television Society and an Emmy nomination.

For ten years he has run his own London-based communications consultancy, offering courses in internal and external communications, individual coaching in communications skills, and agenda, production and presentation services for business seminars. His clients include BT, Caledonia Oil and Gas, Cisco Systems, Deloitte, the international Forum of Incident Response and Security Teams, HSBC, the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and Virgin Money. He also trains Peace Observers in reporting and diary-keeping before their tours of duty in the Middle East.

Areas of Expertise

Frank specialises in courses on internal and external communications skills which marry up-to-the-minute monitoring of the media landscape to classic narrative techniques.

“The paradox,” says Wintle, “is that as the consumer of communications, whether at the workplace or at leisure, gets ever more sceptical and sophisticated through grazing and evaluating a proliferation of information-sources, so it becomes imperative for the communicator to get right to the classic roots of story-telling and understand very precisely what he or she is doing and how it can plausibly be done: story, structure and a sympathetic understanding of the target audience are at the heart of everything I teach. Spin, not to put too fine a point upon it, has spun itself into the grave.

On behalf of a major UK business enterprise Wintle is currently devising a programme to add business value by integrating internal and external communications.

He has written for most of Britain’s national newspapers, worked as a presenter for BBC television and a producer and presenter for Radio 4, and is a published historian and biographer. He has also been a visiting professor in media at Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts, and the University of Vermillion, South Dakota.

Client Comments

Dear Frank, “Experience is not what happens to a man, it is what a man does with what happens to him” Aldous Huxley

I am writing to say thank you for yesterday’s course. You made the adrenaline flow whilst ensuring that the day was relaxed, practical and informative. I came away feeling that I had gained a sound basic set of tools that I could use as required. Many, many thanks for such a useful and practical day.

Senior Partner, Chartered Surveying Practice, and member of The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors

We are very keen to progress more sessions. Aside from the confidence to face the media, I believe the most valuable lesson we learned was to think about our story - one we take for granted and neglect to a certain extent. We need to have someone like you around to ask those tough and pointed questions, to provoke thought and help arrange the story. Thanks for a wonderful training session.

International Business Executive

Could you let me have some dates for the last two sessions? I have to say I am sad this series is coming to an end, but I was delighted to recommend you to a colleague to train another division's management team… I am more than happy to say how pleased this department, and those attending, have been with your courses…
… Given the amount of repeat business you get from the bank, you will appreciate how much we value your expertise and your services. You adapted these very well to the more specialised area in which our team works. We both felt the time spent with you was extremely worthwhile.

Public Affairs Manager, multinational bank - and the result of his internal recommendation

Just had a chat to the client and she said you were a fantastic chairperson and she's "absolutely delighted" about how everything went…
… Thanks ever so much for yesterday. Everybody raved about the session and we've certainly achieved our objective of holding the most popular team away-day ever.
