John has led soldiers at every level from troop to division and has had more than his share of controversial and challenging situations to deal with. Unusually he has served as a member of 4 regiments including Special Forces at various times and has had to make leadership work in widely differing contexts. He has worked under American and British command in the field, most recently in Iraq where he played a key part in disproving the pre-war intelligence on WMD.
John has served and lived in the Middle East for a total of five years. Amongst other experiences he witnessed Israeli bombing in Beirut. He worked for the Foreign Office in Saudi Arabia and Yemen during and after the period of 9/11. He is credited with having played a key part in avoiding the possibility of war in the Yemen through his initiatives with local armed forces there.
Back in Britain he oversaw the first big Iraqi abuse court martial and was a member of the high level team which visited Libya to investigate possibilities for mutual cooperation following that country’s decision to give up WMD. He also advised authorities in Bogota on military/police cooperation in the fight against narco-terrorism.
In 1998 John was awarded the OBE for leadership of his battalion on operations. In 2007 he was awarded the CBE for his work on behalf of his soldiers while commanding his brigade.
John is the only British Army officer to have simultaneously commanded a division and a brigade.
John was educated at Eton, Sandhurst and Cambridge. He has military language qualifications in Arabic, Portuguese, French and German. He was an instructor at the Army Command and Staff College.
Now based in the Ministry of Defence in London, John is responsible for key aspects of international defence relations. He has MOD permission to speak on a variety of topics including leadership and motivation and mitigating the risk of global terrorism to commercial interests.
Areas of Expertise
John is an operational soldier, a Middle East expert, a counter terrorist practitioner and military diplomat. He also has extensive experience of homeland security issues, over which he worked closely with chief constables for a three year period. He worked as part of the United Nations team of military observers in the Former Yugoslavia in some highly challenging situations. He is a military planner, having worked for two years on Middle East and Balkans operational planning - often closely with the Americans - as a key member of the Permanent Joint Headquarters. Finally, he is probably the only Army officer of his generation to have earned submarine pay with the Royal Navy.
