Marc Woods is a keynote speaker and BBC commentator.
A member of the British Swimming team at 5 Paralympic Games Marc was at the forefront of the cultural change that turned a disparate group of individuals into a world beating force.
Marcís speech takes you on an inspirational journey Ė giving insights into personal responsibility, leadership, teamwork and motivation - it is a journey that took him from cancer patient to multiple Gold medallist. He is known for his inspiring story which is delivered in a self deprecating, humorous and moving manner. He consistently receives outstanding feedback for his presentation and organisations are quick to re-book him at every opportunity.
At 17 he was diagnosed with bone cancer and had his left leg amputated. At a time when his friends were learning to drive Marc was embarking on a intensive regime of chemotherapy. Marc had previously been a county standard swimmer but within 6 months he was swimming quicker with one leg than he did before when he had two. He had chosen to try and be exceptional and worked extremely hard toward his goal of winning a Paralympic Gold Medal. He went on to win a total of twelve Paralympic medals from five consecutive Games, including four Golds.
The delegates get to share the high points of his career and understand how Marc coped and worked through the low points. On this journey he talks about the need to take personal responsibility, motivating both himself and his team and becoming an effective leader. The presentation culminates with some excellent video footage showing the team of which he was part of winning the gold medal in Sydney and in Athens.
In short Marc illustrates how the hurdles that have been put in front of him have simply made him jump higher.
Areas of Expertise
Marc uses his own personal story to illustrate the difference between making the decision to strive to become exceptional as opposed to being satisfied with merely being good. It is a story about getting knocked down but getting up again and aiming to be the best you can be. In short it is a presentation that mirrors the attributes that anyone wanting to be succeed in business must have.
As Marc takes your delegates through his story he draws parallels to the challenges that face businesses today. From the need for everyone to take personal responsibility to team cohesion and through to organisational culture change; each element will resonate with anyone who wants to be successful.
Perhaps more importantly though Marcís presentation will inevitably win over those who have not yet bought into an organisationís plans, those people who are holding back a business and inhibiting it from achieving its true potential.
An unexpected defeat in Atlanta, and the realisation that a supposed team had not shared a common goal and therefore failed to achieve its potential, led to a rebuilding process. A change in culture was required one where everyone needed to understand the power of teamwork.
This rebuilding process could not have been more successful with Marcís team taking Gold and setting new world records at both the Sydney 2000 and the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games.
The messages within Marcís presentation are all very clear. They are delivered in a powerful and entertaining way that encourages the audience to be the best they can be and to implement this attitude into their everyday work life.
Personal Best is a combination of an autobiography and personal development book. It also mirrors the speech that Marc delivers. Consequently many of Marcís clients choose to purchase this a conference gift for their delegates. Published by Capstone 2006.

Your presentation was fantastic and judging by the hordes of people around you at all times, very well received!
We were absolutely thrilled with Marcís ďstoryĒ. He enthralled us, entertained us he moved us through the emotions, but critically he showed us the power of focus in delivering our goals and objectives. It was so good to see the whole team leaving the session with a smile on their face and a spring in their step.
Thank you for taking the time to come and speak to us at our divisional meeting, we thoroughly enjoyed your talk and found it truly inspirational.
His talk was enlightening but also entertaining and he certainly kept the audience sitting on the edge of their seats! His messages about teamwork, communication and being supportive were aptly illustrated and the importance of dedication and hard work were obvious by his own achievements.
My special thanks to you is for sharing a part of your life straight from the heart - it was inspirational. I was also really pleased that you chose to stay with us on Tuesday evening and Wednesday morning as it demonstrated your commitment to, and interest in, us.
I want to thank you so very much for coming along to speak us. All that were there hung on every word, cheered you down the straight and were with you on the Path to Gold.
The beauty of Marc's presentation was that he tailored his remarkable story to highlight the issues we had discussed in our pre-conference meeting. Every member of my team gained something.
The LIA convention was all about inspiration and motivation and we believe that is embodied in Marc.
Yesterday was a special one for all of us. You touched people's lives at many different levels with your unique story.
The speakers were all very good and engaging - with the exception of Marc Woods. He is the exception as I found him absolutely outstanding in terms of his humility and motivation. I was so impressed by his presentation that I think we should invite him to our offices so that the rest of the company can get to meet him, and learn from him too (Plus everyone needs to read his book; I am finding it VERY HARD to put down).
The event was a great success, due in large part to your wonderful and very moving presentation.
I only received absolutely positive comments so I am sorry that I am unable to help you improve - it seems you were just perfect. I sincerely hope that we can work together in the future.
