Stef du Plessis has pursued three very successful careers: in the first he was a decorated soldier, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel as the commanding officer of an elite parachute regiment. In the second, he earned distinction as one of the top 1% of sales people in the world; became an award winning sales manager with one of the world’s largest financial institutions; and went on to build a successful financial services brokerage.
Today he is widely recognised as a leading resource in the field of people development: author, consultant, coach and lecturer who also presents workshops and speaks worldwide on personal effectiveness, teamwork, and leadership.
As a keynote speaker, he has addressed audiences approaching 10 000 delegates at some of the world’s most prestigious conferences.
Areas of Expertise
During the past ten years he has delivered more than 2,500 paid presentations globally, including twice at the annual meetings of the Million Dollar Round Table in the USA, which is the world's most prestigious sales organisation, with more than 7,000 members from 50 Nations around the globe. Within the speaking industry, Stef has earned the respect of his peers from around the globe, borne out by the fact that he is one of only a handful of select speakers ever to have been invited to speak at each of the annual meetings of the National Speakers Associations worldwide.
Stef is recognized internationally as a leading resource in the fields of self mastery, teamwork and leadership. Probably South Africa's most booked speaker worldwide, the last decade has seen him speak and consult throughout Africa, and in the USA, Canada, Europe, the Middle and Far East, Asia and Australia.
He also conducts short workshops, and runs in-house training programmes ranging from a day to a year. Here is a seasoned veteran who has gained a deep understanding of people, processes and systems from having worked with groups of senior executives from blue chip companies around the globe. Putting this experience to good use, he facilitates growth in individuals and within organisations by showing people at all levels how to perform at their peak... from entrepreneurs to government departments and educational institutions... and from start-ups to many of the world’s most recognised brand names across a broad spectrum of cultures and from diverse industries.
He has worked with blue collar workers on the workshop floor and with all levels of management, through to the boardrooms of global business leaders... with youth leaders involved with community upliftment programmes at an informal level, and with senior government officials... and he has coached self-made millionaires, Olympic athletes and world record holders.
He also heads up a people development organisation. While minimum qualification on the team is a relevant masters degree, a number of the associates hold PhD’s, Stef himself holds a masters degree in leadership, which he earned with distinction.
Together, Stef and his team have implemented some of the most comprehensive people development programmes ever seen in the Southern hemisphere, helping a number of global brand leaders to improve efficiency, raise productivity, enhance profitability through the development of personal effectiveness, teamwork, and leadership at all levels.
One of their long-term interventions for Gold Fields, a global leader in the production of precious metals, had such a significant impact on the workforce as a whole, that it caused a ripple-effect throughout the entire local community... to the extent that it grabbed the personal attention of South African president, Thabo Mbeki, who paid the project a visit so that he could experience firsthand the nation-building potential that is ignited when you create a culture that inspires people towards patterns of excellence in their everyday living.
Stef has been a guest on radio and TV, and has been the “mind coach” for the South African Olympic soccer team. He has is an experienced parachutist, a qualified rescue diver, has cycled solo across South Africa to raise funds for police widows and orphans, and has paddled one of Africa’s longest rivers. He lives in Johannesburg with his wife Maureen, and their daughters Dani and Jessi. Maureen continues to practice as a medical doctor.
