The first British Woman to walk to the Magnetic North Pole
Sue Stockdale is a high flyer whose remarkable achievements have inspired many people to transform their dreams into reality. She has tested her capabilities to the limits in business, sport and adventure, and she uses these experiences to encourage others to move out of their comfort zones.
Sue started her career in Corporate Training and Development working for British Gas. In 1994, she went on to work with the United Nations in the former Yugoslavia where she took part in development of a major Change Management programme with the UN civilian contingent.
A year later, Sue saw an advertisement in a newspaper which said: “Wanted – novice arctic explorers to ski to the Magnetic North Pole”. As an athlete who had represented Scotland, Sue knew she was fit enough, but had no experience of cross-country skiing or arctic temperatures. She sent off for details and when the brochure arrived asking “are you man enough for the Ultimate Challenge?” she became determined to win her place on the team.
Following months of assessments and gruelling tests, she was eventually chosen from over 500 applicants as one of the team members to be led by David Hempleman-Adams. She then had to raise £15,000 to pay for her place in the expedition.
During the 30 days in the freezing Arctic, she was continually tested both physically and mentally and became the first British woman to ski to the Magnetic North Pole. After this success, Sue took part in expeditions to the Geographical North Pole, Antarctica and Greenland. Most recently she finished runner-up in Channel 4’s Superhuman undergoing some of the toughest scientific tests ever seen on TV.
Areas of Expertise
Not content to take life more slowly, Sue has used her achievements to become a role model for business people by bringing together her business, academic, and adventure knowledge into programmes on leadership, motivation and entrepreneurship. She continues to develop her own capabilities and is now in demand as a speaker, executive coach and facilitator.
Sue is an ambassador for women’s enterprise, and a leading authority on the subject. She works across Europe and is launching the London Chapter of Women Presidents Organisation – a peer network for women-owned businesses with annual turnovers in excess of £1million. She also serves on two national committees advising on women’s enterprise issues and is a frequent guest lecturer at leading universities on leadership and entrepreneurship.
Sue has an MBA in Entrepreneurship and MSc in Quality Management and author of Kickstart your Motivation and Secrets of Successful Women Entrepreneurs which have received many favourable reviews.
